What is the League?
The League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers, Inc. was founded in 1959 for the purpose of promoting and fostering theatrical productions produced in Off-Broadway theatres, to assist in the voluntary exchange of information among its members, and to serve as the collective voice of its membership in pursuit of these purposes.

Can anyone join the League?
Any person or business entity engaged as an Off-Broadway theatre owner or operator, theatre manager, producer or manager of a production in an Off-Broadway theatre may join the League. Members of the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers are obligated to abide by the collective bargaining agreements currently in place with Actors' Equity Association, the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers, and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers.

How do I apply for membership?
There are two ways to apply. Click here for a printable application or call the League Administrator Jeffrey Shubart at (212) 924-2817 to request an application form by fax. The application form, accompanied by your dues check (made payable to The League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers, Inc.) should be mailed to the League at 322 Eighth Avenue, 21st Floor, New York, NY 10001. When your application has been processed, your name will be added to the League mailing list. Your canceled check will be your receipt for membership.

Can a corporate entity apply for membership?
There are three categories of membership: (1) Theatres ($300 annual dues) (2) Productions ($300 annual dues for commercial productions, $150 annual dues for not-for-profit productions, and $75 annual dues for not-for-profit productions in theatres with 199 seats or fewer) or (3) Individuals ($100 annual dues.) However, in each case, a representative must be designated as the "voting member."

What are the benefits of League membership?
Member benefits (where applicable) include:

• Representation at the negotiation table for collective bargaining agreements with Actors' Equity Association, the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers, and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers
• Support at grievance proceedings under those agreements, as well as information and guidance regarding the history of the agreements and past industry practices.
• Shared information at membership meetings regarding members experiences, concerns, and trends within the industry.
• Promotional display racks for flyers and brochures are provided to member theatres that productions (member or non-member) may use to advertise their shows to Off-Broadway audiences. These racks are maintained by the League, free of charge to member theatres, in cooperation with the Theater Development Fund.
• League member production benefits will not apply to productions whose principals are individual members. The production must join to receive benefits.

If a production joins, are all the principals considered members?
For a production or theatre membership, one person must be designated the voting member and only one vote will be counted. However, all the principals within a production entity may join as individuals.

How will I be informed about League activities?
You will receive notice of general membership meetings through the mail, at the address you designate as that of the voting member. If you elect to provide us with an e-mail address, you will also receive e-mails from time to time disseminating industry news, promotional opportunities, etc.

Can the League provide me with a standard budget for my Off-Broadway show?
There is no such thing as a standard budget for an Off-Broadway show. The best course of action for a novice producer is to hire an experienced Off-Broadway general manager, who may be engaged to produce a budget specific to the show's needs.

Can the League guide me through the process of producing an Off-Broadway show?
No, the League does not function as mentor for the new producer. We do recommend that the new producer hire an experienced Off-Broadway general manager, and we can provide a list of general managers who are also League members. We also recommend the Commercial Theatre Institute's producing workshops for the new producer.

Does the League have a list of all the Off-Broadway theatres available for rental?
We have compiled a list of member and non-member commercial rental theatres along with contact names and phone numbers. It should not be considered a comprehensive list, but we do try to update it frequently. However, the League does not have any theatre rental information such as rental fees, theatre specifications and/or theatre availability.

Does the League share statistical data on its member productions, such as box office grosses?
No, the League does not disseminate any statistics.

Does the League have historical information on Off-Broadway?
The League does not compile any historical information, but you may wish to visit the Internet Off-Broadway Database which provides a catalogue of shows produced Off-Broadway.
